In Dream You Came

Mount Arrowsmith, Port Alberni,
seen from the Quay

In dream, I am a dark-haired girl,
a long plait hanging down my back,
snapping black laughing eyes,
impish smile.
and you? you are smitten,
small half-smile, appraising eyes
that say you like what you see.
In dream your arms
close around me from behind
and I am held all night long,
till I wake,
wondering, since we were so real,
was that past-life memory?
Did you find me only in dream
this lifetime,
as you once found me before?
You must have known
how badly
I needed
a hug.
And so, in dream, you came.

  1. mmmm. Regardless of what heartbreak took this one from you, the return in dream time to hug and to hold sounds lovely.

  3. Sounds like a bitter-sweet dream. It's nice though, to feel a lingering warmth enough after waking to write these beautiful lines. ((Hugs)) to you, Sherry :)

  4. Oh, Sherry....this poem really gives me a lump. I think sometimes we are given in a dream what we might need. Take that hug as a sign that you are hugged and loved. Carry it with you throughout the day.

  7. Vancouver Island has such incredible, surreal vistas. Lucky you. And you've pinned such a tender, exquisite dream - beautifully drawn - against it. An awesome post!

  8. So touching, Sherry....I think dreams can feel so real that sometimes it's like they really are giving us exactly what we needed. The mountain in that photo is beautiful!

  9. I like this poem. This is a sweet and sour dream, Sherry. Sometimes they feel so real it is hard to shed them off in the morning. I wish it was not just a dream.

  14. A hug in a dream can have the reality of real hands wrapping around, what a wonderful and yet a little sad thought. This is wonderful and still a little sad Sherry... Like life

  17. Ah, past life memory, inaccessible, (perhaps reached only via dreams), but so strongly experienced, in any case. I am glad you felt the warmth and love of those loving hands.

  21. Sherry,

A longing which must still wish fulfillment for those same hugs. I place so much importance in the value of hugging. The memories can endure. A lovely and emotional poem of dreamy wishes.
Hope you find some hugs today Sherry. They are deserved:)

  24. I needed a hug.
And so, in dream, you came.

The dreams give the same effect when one is in its throes of delight. A hug is a hug even in our dreams!

  25. How I love this: the longing and the hug.

I am currently rereading The Best of Charles de Lint, and your play with dream and (agreed upon) reality puts me right into the stories.

In dreams, we can find anything... and keep it. ♥
